CALL FOR MUSIC COMPOSERS FOR THE MIT OUT SOUND SILENT SHORT FILM COMPETITION
The FDCP will be selecting ten (10) musical scorers and composers for The Musical Scoring Program 2021. It is open to all Filipino musical composers. They will have these privileges:
- Undergo a series of intensive music programs and be mentored by renowned international and local film composers.
- Collaborate with the filmmakers from the International Silent Film Lab to create musical accompaniments for their silent short films.
- Direct their original musical piece as a live performance to the Mit Out Sound silent short film.
- Their original composition will premiere at the 15th International Silent Film Festival Manila, to be held at the Metropolitan Theater in November.
- Get a chance to win P10,000.00 for Best Musical Score under the Silent Short Film Competition.
GUIDELINES FOR MUSICAL SCORERS & COMPOSERS
- The Musical Scoring Program is open to Filipino music composers aged eighteen (18) and above with:
- At least basic music scoring experience for any media or video content;
- At least basic knowledge in reading and writing music notations for any form of media materials;
- Must have their own personal equipment to participate in the scoring program and in composing the scoring for the silent short films;
- Must be willing to attend the 3-day intensive virtual musical scoring progrm with renowned local and international film composers; and,
- Must be willing to collaborate with the filmmakers from the Mit Out Sound International Silent Film Lab to create musical scores, as live accompaniment to their silent short films.
- To qualify for the Musical Scoring Program, interested applicants must:
- Be a registrant of the FDCP National Registry (NR). Non-registrants may sign up through https://nationalregistry.fdcp.ph/signup
- Submit the following documents to [email protected]:
- An accomplished application form;
- A scanned copy of a government-issued ID;
- A portfolio of their previous works which may contain:
- Short compositions for films or scenes in films;
- Scoring for TVE commercials that show thoughtful awareness of drama and human emotion;
- Radio show/commercial scoring that conveys the tone of the scene;
- Recorded or published instrumental music showing thematic or emotional conveyance through a range of instrumental expertise;
- Scores for political jingles.
- The deadline for submission is on September 14, 2021 (Tuesday). The announcement of the ten (10) selected music composers is on September 17, 2021 (Friday).
- Ten (10) selected music composers for the program must attend the following:
- An exclusive, all-expense paid, three (3)-day intensive virtual musical scoring program, and a one-on-one mentoring sessions with renowned international and local film composers on September 24-26, 2021 (Friday to Sunday);
- One-on-one meeting with their counterpart filmmakers from the Mit Out Sound Silent Short Film Competition;
- Rehearsal sessions with their selected performers/talents along with their counterpart filmmakers from the Mit Out Sound Silent Short Film Lab 2021;
- Live perfomance at the Manila Metropolitan Theater of their piece.
- Their final compositions will be performed live by local talents at the 15th International Silent Film Festival Manila to be held at the Metropolitan Theater in November 2021.
- The rights of all the completed music output will belong to the musical scorer.
- The use of original literary sources, music materials, artwork, photography, etc. must have proper clearance from their respective copyright owners before they can be used in the final output. The Festival organizers shall not be liable for any costs related to claims of performing rights organizations.
- FDCP reserves the right to create, revoke, and modify at any time, in any way its entry requirements, rules, and regulations at its absolute discretion without prior notice. Finalists shall be bound by any amendments or addition to the entry requirements, rules and regulations herewith.
- In case of any violation of the guidelines and rules, the organizers and the Selection Committee reserves the right to disqualify the participant and their music or remove them from the program.
- The organizers and the judging committee reserves the right to disqualify any participant and/or to forfeit any prize from a participant who is found to have committed plagiarism or has undertaken fraudulent practice and/or activities harmful to the Festival or the Festival submission process.
- The decision of the Selection Committee is final and irrevocable. The organizers and the Selection Committee are not obliged to give explanations for the results.
MUSICAL SCORING PROGRAM
The selected musical scorers are required to attend and undergo intensive online music that would help them to develop their skills in film scoring, and compose a piece of original music for the silent short films assigned to them that will premier at the 15th International Silent Film Festival Manila.
- MASTERCLASS WITH MENTORS (SEPTEMBER 24, 2021)
- Each mentor will impart key ideas on their expertise in music composition for one and a half (1 ½) hours. This will also give the finalists and the mentors to become familiar with each other in terms of their style. The Masterclass will also hone in on the technical aspects of film scoring and composition.
After the lectures, the Mentors will give the music composers an assignment for the Musical Scoring Program. They will score, arrange, orchestrate and conduct the music of a three (3) minute scene of a silent short film, local or international, using thematic materials provided by and under the guidance of the mentors.
- Each mentor will impart key ideas on their expertise in music composition for one and a half (1 ½) hours. This will also give the finalists and the mentors to become familiar with each other in terms of their style. The Masterclass will also hone in on the technical aspects of film scoring and composition.
- COMPOSING MUSIC FOR SILENT FILMS (MENTORSHIP SESSION) (SEPTEMBER 25-26, 2021)
- Through the first day’s assessment, each music composer will be given a one-on-one session with one of the four (4) mentors. Each finalist will be given two (2) hours with their assigned mentors to intensively work on their assignments. The music composer must be able to show his/her work area for the mentor to see the instruments and devices he/she will be using. At the same time, they must also be able to share his/her computer screen where he/she will be recording and editing his/her work.
At the end of the session, the music composers must present their finished compositions to the mentors.
- Through the first day’s assessment, each music composer will be given a one-on-one session with one of the four (4) mentors. Each finalist will be given two (2) hours with their assigned mentors to intensively work on their assignments. The music composer must be able to show his/her work area for the mentor to see the instruments and devices he/she will be using. At the same time, they must also be able to share his/her computer screen where he/she will be recording and editing his/her work.
- MEETING FOR COLLABORATION WITH THE FILMMAKERS OF MIT OUT SOUND INTERNATIONAL SILENT FILM LAB (SEPTEMBER 26, 2021)
- The importance of the workshop and assignment is to assess the style of the music composer that will match the needs of the filmmaker from the Mit Out Sound International Silent Film Lab. The virtual meeting is for the filmmakers and musicians to get acquainted with each other and be familiar with each others’ works. However, the pairing of the musicians with the filmmakers will still be decided by the Selection Committee at a separate session through an online deliberation and will be announced to the participants via email.
